Sydney Urban Courtyard

The existing garden was a dry, square patch of grass overlooked by the new house extension through bi-fold doors. It was uninspiring and not suitable for a young family looking to spend time outdoors and entertain guests.

The Challenge

Create a functional and inviting outdoor space for both family time and entertaining.

  • Increase privacy while maintaining an open feel.
  • Provide a dedicated cooking and seating area for gatherings.
  • Design a space that would evolve as the children grew.

The Design Solution

A simple lawn with curved edges was introduced, seamlessly connecting to the existing deck. Stepping stones flow from the deck to the lawn, creating a natural transition between the spaces.

In one corner, stepping stones form a solid base for a bespoke barbecue unit, made from cast concrete with eucalyptus wood doors for storage. Native plants were selected to ensure year-round interest, seasonal flowering, and to encourage pollinators into this urban courtyard.

The Result

This once-unused space is now a functional and stylish courtyard, providing room for play, relaxation, and entertaining. The low-maintenance design ensures it remains practical as the family’s needs change over time.

Fun Fact:

This Sydney garden features Liriope Muscari, a resilient plant that can also thrive in Scottish gardens.

Ryan was recommended to us by our landscapers and has been wonderful to work with.

Ryan worked with us to help create a design that suited our needs of how we wanted to use our space. Moreover though, Ryan has been very helpful through each step of the way, from looking at council regulations to checking that the final product met his original vision.
