Multi-Level Garden
Glasgow
This garden was divided in two by a tall 1.5m-high brick wall, making it feel disconnected and dominated by a large, imposing structure.
The Challenge
Make the space more usable by integrating levels and softening the dominance of the brick wall.
- Reduce the visual impact of the wall.
- Create more functional areas within the garden.
- Ensure low maintenance while providing year-round planting interest.
The Design Solution
After reviewing the level changes, we transformed the space by:
- Excavating part of the rear slope and installing a timber retaining wall, allowing the garden to flow down into a new seating area.
- Building a set of timber steps with layered planting, creating a natural transition between levels.
- Extending planting in front of the wall and around the lawn to integrate it into the garden, making it feel less dominant.
- Selecting flowering plants and pollinator-friendly species that provide seasonal interest with minimal upkeep.
The Result
The garden is now a visually engaging, multi-functional space, with integrated levels and a harmonious planting scheme.
Fun Fact:
The property is built on a disused railway line, and the garden slope is what remains of the old railway embankment.
Ryan was a fantastic landscaper who provided a truly fantastic service for our back garden project. He was involved in every aspect of the project, from design to build, which made the process extremely easy but also meant he delivered exactly what we wanted and with something that suited our environmental conditions. His flexibility with dates and budgets was also highly appreciated, as we were working on a tight budget.
We were really impressed with the build phase, works were done considerately and fully completed. No bits left over. The finished garden was not only beautiful but also functional and easy to maintain. Ryan even produced a planting plan for us to follow for maintenance, perfect for novice gardeners. We would highly recommend Ryan to anyone looking for a talented and reliable garden designer or landscaper.Jason Chatoo, Glasgow
