Contemporary Garden

The existing garden was dominated by high walls on two sides and felt uninviting, with just a patch of grass and no real incentive to spend time outdoors.

The Challenge

Soften the space and create a functional outdoor living area.

  • Retain mature shrubs at the rear for privacy.
  • Introduce a closeable louvre veranda for shade and shelter.
  • Reduce the visual dominance of the high walls.

The Design Solution

To make the walls less imposing, a sweeping curve was introduced to break their rigid profile. A wooden seating area was built into the lowest section to create a usable space within the garden.

A small raised garden bed was installed along the fence to bring planting into the space, softening the boundaries. Evergreen magnolia trees were planted to provide additional privacy and seasonal interest.

Stepping stones now connect the patio area to the built-in seating, encouraging movement through the garden.

The Result

The garden has been transformed into a functional, welcoming space, seamlessly blending privacy, planting, and seating areas.

Fun Fact:

The new paving was installed on a metal frame over the existing patio, reducing excavation and removal costs.

Ryan worked with us to design our Sydney innerwest backyard and front courtyard and we are delighted with the results! Ryan listened to our ideas and expanded on them, whilst sharing his experience and own creativity, and he was accommodating to the changes we wanted as we progressed. The result is that we not only have a new outdoor living and entertaining area that is functional and beautifully complements our home, but also that we feel we have contributed to and can proudly 'own' the result.
